Many people find themselves struggling at some point in their lives. Whether it’s due to a major life event or just the pressures of everyday life, feeling overwhelmed is perfectly normal. However, if you find yourself struggling to cope on a regular basis, it might be time to seek out therapy. Therapy can provide you with the tools you need to better understand and manage your emotions. It can also help you to explore the root causes of your struggles and identify patterns that might be holding you back. If you’re ready to make a change, therapy can offer an invaluable opportunity for growth and healing.

When people think of therapy, they often envision a never-ending process of weekly appointments that stretch on for months or even years. However, the reality of therapy is quite different. In most cases, therapy is a short-term process that lasts anywhere from a few weeks to a few months. The length of therapy varies depending on the individual’s needs and goals. For example, someone who is struggling with minor anxiety may only need a few sessions to learn some coping skills. On the other hand, someone who is dealing with complex trauma may need more time to work through their issues. Ultimately, the goal of therapy is to help the individual resolve their issues and learn how to cope with them in a healthy way. With that in mind, the length of therapy will vary from person to person.

The first therapy session is usually an opportunity for the therapist and client to get to know each other. The therapist will ask questions about the client’s background and current situation, and the client will have a chance to share their goals for therapy. The therapist will also explain their approach to therapy and how they plan to work with the client. This conversation will help the therapist to develop a treatment plan that is tailored to the individual needs of the client. By the end of the first session, the therapist and client should have a good understanding of each other and a clear plan for how to move forward in therapy.

When most people think of therapy, they imagine lying on a couch and spilling their deepest, darkest secrets to a psychiatrist. However, therapy is actually a much broader term that can refer to any kind of professional treatment for mental or emotional illness. Counseling, on the other hand, is a specific type of therapy that focuses on providing guidance and support to people who are struggling with challenges in their lives. While both therapy and counseling can be helpful, they are best used in different situations. Therapy is often used to treat more serious mental illnesses, such as depression or anxiety, while counseling is more commonly used to help people deal with life changes or personal problems. Ultimately, the decision of whether to seek therapy or counseling should be based on the individual’s needs.

About Us

Meet Our Therapist

I would like to first congratulate you on being here and taking that first step towards improving your health and wellbeing. If you are trying to navigate the physical and mental struggles of day to day life, want to learn effective ways to cope and manage symptoms, to practice healthy communication with others, improve your outlook on life and lived experiences or even just want someone to listen to your story in a nonjudgmental space, you have come to the right place. Together, we will work towards identifying what goals you have in order to promote balance and help you live your life!

I have worked in private practice, in-home support, detention, community college, and the county system. I recognize that no two people are the same and therefore do not have a “one size fits all” approach to therapy. What I can tell you is that progress can be made as long as you are committed to doing the work.

I know that therapy can be intimidating, especially when first seeking services. However, I want to ensure you that this process places you front and center in your own journey to healing and I am privileged to be able to walk alongside you as you take that first step.

In my spare time, I enjoy cooking, baking, a good Netflix documentary, hockey, decorating and spending time with family. I make sure to incorporate plenty of self-care into my own daily routine including exercise, music and reading.

What is a Therapist?

A therapist is a trained professional who provides counseling and psychological support to patients. Therapists help patients to cope with mental health disorders, life transitions, and relationship issues. They also provide support and guidance to patients as they work to make positive changes in their lives. There are many different types of therapists, but all share the common goal of helping patients to improve their mental health and well-being. Some of the responsibilities of a therapist include:

Establishing a therapeutic relationship with patients

This relationship is based on trust and mutual respect. It is essential for therapists to create a safe and supportive environment where patients feel comfortable sharing their thoughts and feelings.

Assessing patients’ needs

Therapists use various assessment tools to identify the specific needs of each patient. This information helps to guide treatment planning and goal setting.

Developing individualized treatment plans

Treatment plans are created based on the specific needs of each patient. They may include different types of therapy, such as cognitive-behavioral therapy or interpersonal therapy.

providing therapy

This is the core responsibility of a therapist. therapists use a variety of techniques to help patients achieve their goals.

Monitoring progress

Therapists regularly check in with patients to assess their progress and ensure that they are making progress towards their goals. They may also adjust treatment plans as needed based on changes in a patient’s condition or goals.

The length of each therapy session varies depending on the type of therapy being conducted. For example, a session of cognitive behavioral therapy may last for 60 minutes, while a patient who is dealing with mild depression may only need 30 minutes to talk about their feelings and develop a plan to cope with them. The length of each session also depends on the specific needs of the client. For example, a client who is struggling with addiction may need longer sessions in order to make progress. In general, most therapists will recommend meeting for at least one hour per week in order to make significant progress. However, some clients may benefit from more frequent meetings, while others may only need to meet every other week. Ultimately, the decision about how often to meet and for how long will be made between the therapist and the client based on what would be most beneficial.

When it comes to finding a therapist, it’s important to choose someone who you feel comfortable with and who you feel is qualified to help you with your specific issue. If you’re not sure what kind of therapist you need, you can start by asking your doctor for a referral, a close friend or searching online for therapists in your area. Once you’ve narrowed down your options, it’s a good idea to schedule an initial consultation with each therapist to get a sense of their personality and approach. Be sure to ask about their experience treating people with your type of problem, as well as their success rate. Also, be sure to ask about their methods and whether they use any techniques that might not be right for you. By taking the time to find the right therapist, you can increase your chances of success in therapy.

Frequently Asked Questions

First, we are not a Psychiatrist so we cannot give medication. And, at our therapy practice, we believe that medication is not always the best or only option for treating mental health conditions. We prefer to use a more holistic approach that includes talk therapy, lifestyle changes, and other non-medication treatments. We believe that this approach is more effective in the long run and can help people to better understand and manage their mental health condition. In addition, we believe that this approach is less likely to have negative side effects than medication. As a result, we do not prescribe medication at our practice.

Therapy is a unique experience for everyone who tries it. The therapist-patient relationship is central to the success of therapy, so it’s important to find a therapist you feel comfortable with. Therapy sessions typically involve talking about your thoughts and feelings, and working together to find solutions to whatever challenges you’re facing. Although therapy can be challenging at times, it can also be very rewarding. Working through tough issues with the help of a supportive therapist can lead to positive changes in your life.

When people seek therapy, they often do so with the expectation that their conversations will remain confidential. In most cases, this is true. Therapists are bound by law to respect the privacy of their clients and to keep the contents of their conversations confidential. However, there are some situations in which therapists are required to break confidentiality. For example, if a client discloses plans to harm themselves or others, therapists are obliged to take steps to prevent any potential harm. Similarly, if abuse is disclosed during therapy, therapists may be required to report this to the authorities. While confidentiality is generally respected in therapy, there are some exceptions that it is important to be aware of.

With so many different types of therapists out there, it can be hard to know how to choose the right one for your needs. If you’re feeling lost, here are a few tips to help you find the therapist that’s right for you.

First, think about what you’re looking for in therapy. Are you looking for someone to talk to about your relationship problems? Or are you hoping to work on some deeper issues, like childhood trauma? Once you know what your goals are, you can start to narrow down your search.

Next, consider what type of therapist you feel most comfortable with. Do you prefer someone who is direct and to the point? Or someone who is more compassionate and understanding? There is no wrong answer here, it’s all about what makes you feel most comfortable.

Finally, take your time in choosing a therapist. This is not a decision that should be made lightly, as it’s important that you find someone you trust and feel comfortable with. Don’t be afraid to interview multiple therapists before making your decision. And if at any time during therapy you don’t feel like your therapist is a good fit, don’t hesitate to look for someone new.

In order to provide you with the best care possible, our therapy sessions are typically 53-60 minutes long. This allows us to really get to know you and understand your unique situation. We also find that this length of time is enough to make significant progress on whatever issue you’re facing. Of course, we understand that life is unpredictable and there may be times when you need to cancel or reschedule a session. We just ask for 24 hours notice so that we can offer the appointment to someone else who may need it. We appreciate your understanding and cooperation in making our therapy sessions as effective as possible.

Here at the Bent Not Broken Therapy & Wellness, we offer a variety of therapy services designed to help our clients find peace and balance in their lives. We understand that the journey to wellness is different for everyone, which is why we offer both weekly and biweekly therapy sessions. For others, meeting twice a week provides a deeper level of support and allows them to move through their challenges more quickly. Ultimately, it is up to each individual to decide what frequency works best for them. Our goal is simply to provide a safe and supportive space for our clients to heal and grow.

The decision of what to talk about in therapy is a personal one. You may feel uncomfortable discussing certain topics, and that is okay. Your therapist will respect your wishes and will not push you to discuss anything that you are not ready to talk about. However, it is important to keep in mind that therapy is designed to help you work through difficult experiences and emotions. Avoiding certain topics may prevent you from making the progress you hope to achieve in therapy. If you are unsure about how to proceed, you can always discuss your concerns with your therapist. Together, you can decide what topics will be most helpful for you to explore in therapy.

You will need a few things to set up your space for a successful telehealth visit. A solid internet connection is key – without it, you may experience lagging or buffering, which can disrupt the flow of the visit. You’ll also want to choose a quiet, private space where you can sit or stand comfortably without being interrupted. If possible, it’s helpful to have a landline phone nearby in case of technical difficulties. And finally, you’ll need the device you’ll be using for the visit. This could be a computer, laptop, tablet, or even your smartphone. As long as you have the necessary apps installed and are able to connect to the internet, any of these devices can be used for a telehealth visit.

One of the most common questions patients ask me is whether they should try telehealth. It’s a valid question—with pros and cons to consider. On the plus side, telehealth can provide more timely access to much needed care, which is especially important if you live in a rural area. It can also be less expensive than in-person visits, and it can be more convenient, since you don’t have to take time off work or find childcare or pay for the crazy price of gas! On the downside, telehealth can feel impersonal, and it’s not an option if you need the interpersonal communication and close contact. It isn’t the same as in person for sure (as we found out during COVID). You also need to make sure your internet connection is reliable. Overall, I think telehealth is a valuable tool, but it’s not right for everyone. The best way to decide if it’s right for you is to try it out!

It offers the convenience of receiving therapy from the comfort of one’s home or any location with internet access. Virtual sessions are conducted through secure video conferencing platforms, ensuring the same level of professional support and confidentiality as in-person sessions. The best therapy for anxiety often depends on the individual’s specific symptoms, needs, and preferences. However, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is widely recognized as one of the most effective treatments for a range of anxiety disorders. CBT helps individuals recognize and challenge negative thought patterns and behaviors, teaching them strategies to cope with and manage their anxiety. While CBT has shown significant success, it’s important to note that different people might benefit from different therapeutic approaches, such as exposure therapy, dialectical behavior therapy, or even medication in conjunction with therapy. A consultation with a mental health professional is essential to determining the best course of treatment for an individual’s unique situation.

If you’re not seeing improvement from therapy, it’s crucial to communicate your feelings and concerns with your therapist. They can provide insight, adjust the therapeutic approach, or suggest alternative methods that might be more beneficial. It’s also worth noting that therapy is a process, and sometimes progress can be slow or even feel like regression. However, if, after multiple sessions and open discussions with your therapist, you still feel unsatisfied, it might be worth seeking a second opinion or considering a different therapist. Everyone’s therapeutic journey is unique, and finding the right fit in terms of therapeutic approach and therapist-client relationship is vital for effective treatment.

Grief counseling can be considered when the grieving process becomes overwhelming, leads to prolonged distress, or interferes with daily functioning. It’s important to consider grief counseling when you find it difficult to manage your grief on your own or when it significantly impacts your mental and emotional well-being.

Grief counseling is specifically tailored to address the unique challenges and emotions associated with loss and mourning. While other forms of therapy, such as general counseling or psychotherapy, can be beneficial for various mental health concerns, grief counseling focuses on grief-related issues exclusively. Grief counselors have specialized training and expertise in helping individuals navigate the complex emotions, guilt, anger, and sadness that accompany loss. They employ therapeutic techniques and approaches that are most effective in helping clients process their grief and develop healthy coping mechanisms. Unlike some other therapies, grief counseling is time-limited and typically focuses on the grief journey, helping individuals move toward acceptance and healing.
